NEARBY MUNICH: KLOSTER ANDECHS [ANDECHS MONASTERY]

The main reason for the popularity of Kloster Andechs, which is situated 180 m (590 ft) above the lake Ammersee, is the good tasting beer that is brewed by the monchs up here on the "Heilige Berg" ["Holy Mountain"]. The beer can not only be bought in shops, it is sold right away at the cozy monastery´s inn (indoor as well as on the sunny terrace). Here you will be served very good traditional bavarian food, too. From the terrace you will also enjoy a wonderful view on the lake Ammersee. Furthermore Kloster Andechs hosts Germay´s oldest church from 1420 which you should not miss to visit (free entrance). The church was later remodelled in Baroque style (1669 - 1751). Advice: You had better go to the church before you start drinking. And if you are a little bit sporty, you should take the S-Bahn-train to Herrsching, directly at the lake Ammersee, and walk right up to Kloster Andechs, which will take you only about an hour. Herrsching is also a good place to start a boat tour across the lake Ammersee.

Location: Andechs, Kloster Andechs, Bergstr. 2
How to get there: S-Bahn to station "Herrsching", continue by bus to stop "Kloster Andechs" or walk (see describtion down below)
Opening times (beer&food): daily all through the year, 10am-8pm

From Herrsching train station to Kloster Andechs it will take you about 75 minutes by foot. Your way up is shown on the map down below. Click here for a larger map with detailed route information.
