With its two onion shaped domes on top of the twin towers of the Gothic Cathedral, the silhouette of the "Frauenkirche" ["church of Our Lady"] is the best-known symbol of the city of Munich. The Frauenkirche is located in Munich's old town not far from Marienplatz (city center).
The building of the Frauenkirche began in 1468 under Duke Sigismund. During the Second World War the Frauenkirche was damaged very hard. It was rebuilt in several phases of construction and renovation.
The south tower of the cathedral can be climbed and offers a unique view over the rooftops of Munich to the Alps. In the entrance area of the imposing late-Gothic interior you will find the legendary Devil's foot step in the floor of the church.
Don´t miss to visit the royal crypt: down at Munich's oldest resting place you will find the tomb of Emperor Ludwig the Bayer (1282-1347).
