MUNICH: SIEGESTOR

In 1840 King Ludwig I. let his architect Friedrich von Gärtner plan a triumphal arch similiar to the Arch of Constantine in Rome. It was supposed to be built at the end of his personal boulevard, the Ludwig Street. The arch was dedicated to the Bavarian army. For this reason it corresponds directly with the Feldherrnhalle at Odeonsplatz at the top of the Ludwig Street.
The Siegestor was built at the same time as the Feldherrnhalle, between 1843 and 1852. After Friedrich von Gärtner's death in 1850 Eduard Metzger took over and finished the work.
The Siegestor is about one kilometer north of the Feldherrnhalle and separates the Ludwig Street from the Leopold Street. The Siegestor also serves as the border between the two Munich districts Maxvorstadt and Schwabing.
Location: Munich, At the end of Ludwig Street
Admission charges / Entrance fees: none
Opening times: day & night
