MUNICH: BAVARIA [STATUE] & RUHMESHALLE [HALL OF FAME]
On a hill at the western end of the Theresienwiese theBavaria , a 18-meter-high bronze sculpture, dominates the scenery. The head of the female figure who serves as secular saint of the state of Bavaria , contains a small viewing platform. The statue was designed by the Munich artist Ludwig Schwanthaler commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria . It was cast in bronze by Ferdinand von Miller. For a small fee the statue can be climbed by a spiral staircase inside the figure. From several viewing hatches you have a nice view of the Theresienwiese and the surrounding neighborhoods. For this reason it is a nice thing to do especially during the Oktoberfest, which takes place right in front of the Bavaria . Next to the Bavaria you will find the Ruhmeshalle [Hall of Fame] which was (like the Bavaria ) built between 1843 and 1853. The three-winged portico desgined by Leo von Klenze serves as a pantheon for Bavarian famous personalities. Their busts have been placed there as a tribute. Since 1966 this tradition continues.
