MUNICH: FELDHERRNHALLE

MUNICH: FELDHERRNHALLE
The Feldherrnhalle was built 1841 - 1844 under King Ludwig I of Bavaria. It was designed by the famous architect Friedrich von Gärtner. The "Loggia dei Lanzi” in Florence served as architectural model for the Feldherrnhalle. The building  was erected to honor the victories of the Bavarian Army. The bronze statues were cast from melted-down guns. The army monument in the middle of the hall was added in 1892 under Prinzregent Luitpold.
In connection with the seizure of power by the Nazis the Feldherrnhalle gained notoriety. On November 9th 1923 a group of rebels (including Adolf Hitler) was stopped by the state police on the way to the War Department. In front of the hall a small bronze plaque was installed in remembrance of the four police officers who were killed in the coup in 1923.
