Munich´s famous central square Marienplatz is dominated by the building of the Neues Rathaus [New City Hall]. The New City Hall was errected 1867-1874 and extended 1899-1903. Every day thousands of people await the performance of the mechanical figures on the clock tower called Glockenspiel. With its 43 bells the Glockenspiel (installed in 1908) plays daily at 11am and 12am, and from March - October additional at 5pm. You can listen to its tune by clicking here and even get a detailed view of the figures by clicking here. For more information about the Glockenspiel please click here.
The viewing gallery in the top of the 85 meter high tower can be reached by a lift. The viewing gallery offers a magnificent view over the rooftops of the city and the Alps (depending on the weather).
In the spacious and richly painted vaults of the New City Hall you will find the Rathauskeller [Council's cellar], a traditional Munich restaurant (since 1867).
The New City Hall is the seat of the Mayor, the City Council and the headquarters of the City Government. On the ground floor in the middle of the building you will find Munich´s Tourist Office.
